Artist’s Statement

What inspires me…

Elements of nature such as flowers and birds are used in my work for reasons of both aesthetics and meaning. I am interested in the obvious conflict of the natural versus the industrial worlds but also the imagery of birds used in spiritual and artistic symbolism to represent our hopes and fears.

I am intrigued by the city landscape that surrounds us, the relationship of nature within the urban environment and our place within it. I hope to capture a moment or a feeling, to tell a story, using the properties of paint on the surface, by layers of tones of painted, silk-screened and drawn imagery and materials such as pages from novels and newspapers. The content of the newspaper articles, classified ads and book pages interact with the imagery that is chosen to be painted and its associated symbolism.
